Design Excellence Awarded to Da Vinci 5 Surgical System
PRODUCT DESIGN/ MEDICAL
Credit Intuitive
The Da Vinci 5 transforms the everyday experience of surgeons and medical teams. Designed with an ergonomic console allowing for intuitive access to numerous functional tools to aid and improve efficiency and performance. Throughout the design process of the Da Vinci 5, the design team engaged and collaborated with surgical teams, clinicians, and contextual elements such as usage environment. This solution is a great example of careful co-design in medical/clinical settings which can yield incredible results. As more design is integrated into the medical industry there will be a renaissance in design excellence improving the experience, functionality and overall effectiveness of futuristic smart healthcare devices.

Samsung Microfiber Filter Reducing Impact of Washing
PRODUCT DESIGN/ SUSTAINABILITY
Credit Samsung
Samsung has developed a machine top device that can capture up to 98% of microfibers emitted in the washing cycle. The Less Microfiber washing machine filter can be used with select Samsung front loading machines and it automatically collects and notifies when the filter is full of microfibers. This overdue device is a step in the right direction with the biggest impact of washing clothes is the release of microfibers which include large volumes of microplastics into our waste water streams which eventually make their way into the environment. I’d hope the next step is the actual integration of this type of collection system into all washing machines.

Smart Drain Reduces Blocked Drains and Urban Flooding Impacts
PRODUCT DESIGN/ SUSTAINABILITY
Credit Dedimuni Charmaine Nadeesha Chandrasena
In a world first a group from Malaysia have designed a dual layer clog resistant smart storm drain system. The system utilises two levels to catch waste and debris, with an easy to monitor sensor system enabling easy disposal and maintenance. The design couldn’t be more timely with increased flooding in many cities disrupting daily life as well as channeling large volumes of uncollected waste into the ocean further degrading the marine environment. Unfortunately as the world’s population grows and with a heavily urbanised population with insufficient waste collection programs we are facing an increase in pollution from flooding as well as health risks to people. This solution is great for when there are flooding events, but it is only curing one symptom of a larger issue.

Humanising and Adding Protection for Out-of-Hospital Infusions
PRODUCT DESIGN/ MEDICAL
Credit Monash Health, Monash Institute of Medical Engineering
CryoCare is reimagining the experience and delivery for infusions. The flask has been designed to maintain drug stability for 24 hours as well as to integrate into an everyday pouch that makes the entire process seamless and less intrusive for out of hospital patients. Medical design is very important at removing or reducing stigmas, and there are a lot in the industry unfortunately. So to see a design that puts the user at the forefront of the design solution is fantastic with a system that integrates easily into our daily lives.

The First Recyclable Helmet
PRODUCT DESIGN/ SUSTAINABILITY
Credit Strategic Sports Ltd.
The S-427 has sustainability at its core, engineered and manufactured to be the first disassembled bike helmet. This novel take on the age old bike helmet is refreshing with the design utilising no adhesives and reclaimed materials for its construction reducing its product footprint drastically. It has managed to achieve all this whilst maintaining structural integrity and strict adherence to global safety standards. I take my helmet off to the team from Strategic Sports Ltd for this unique and what should become more universal design.

Monolithic Minimalism From Nocs
PRODUCT DESIGN
Credit nocs
The new immersive sound experience from nocs offers a compact ultra minimalist product. The speaker is born from a single block of aluminium that is CNC machined, sandblasted and finished meticulously. This submission into the Good Design Awards catches my eye not so much for the impact of the design but a truly simple aesthetic approach to a bluetooth speaker in our ever crowded product markets.
