To wrap up the last couple of weeks focusing on start-ups, Victoria just held the 2024 Governor of Victoria Start-up Awards that recognised leading Victorian Start-ups.
Award Highlights
Following on all the information around start-ups I wanted to highlight that there are many ways to create and launch a new idea. If it is a product idea, then a better and more affordable route can be crowdfunding via platforms such as Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. This week Olive and Oilvent are two such news stories that are launching right now on Kickstarter and IndieGoGo, showing that if your idea might change then get it out there for the world to see and for people to support it.

Products that help assist with stigma and improve the function of devices for impairment are fantastic. Too long can medical devices be distinguishable from everyday electronics. Olive has created a modern, approachable and everyday device that assists people with mild to moderate hearing loss as well as being their companion for everyday earbud functions. This wonderful product has integrated additional features that customers have come to expect from standard bluetooth earbuds but with added sound clarification and isolation. They are also not for show, with FDA approval and a price tag far less than traditional hearing aids.

Oilvent Making Cooking Health and Safety Accessible and Portable
PRODUCT DESIGN
Credit Oilvent
I enjoy designs that can both contribute to better health as well as addressing some pet peeves in cooking. Oilvent has designed a portable range hood that can be used when there is no range hood, perfect for older homes or small spaces that have no rangehood. This both prevents cooking particles building up and harming health within indoor spaces, additionally it has taken it further with oil spitting protection and easy disassembly for cleaning. A simple solution that makes safe cooking accessible to all, which has me thinking why hasn’t this been done already? Well you can support OilVent, currently launching via Kickstarter.

Throwback to Let’s Catch Up #14, where we covered Space Perspective’s Neptune capsule launching in 2025. Enter competitor, EOS-X Space comes out to announce initial launch dates in 2025 from Spain and Abu Dhabi. Competition is healthy and can lead to amazing innovations as well as reducing the price tag of a trip to the earth's stratosphere. Similar to the Neptune capsule the EOS-X aims to immerse new space tourists in all earth has to offer whilst hovering at a cool 40,000 metres whilst delivering a comfortable experience in their own individual compartment and seat.

Bugatti’s Hybrid Hypercar’s Cockpit Promises Experience Like no Other
AUTOMOTIVE
Credit Bugatti
At 115 years old, Bugatti has just revealed its first electrified hybrid hypercar. The Tourbillon is a eye watering $4.1 million but it could be worth it for a car that envisions heritage and craftsmanship as well as a V16 engine and three electric motors generating 1800 horsepower. The driver's seat promises an out of this world experience more akin to flying a plane rather than driving a car. The ‘cockpit’ drivers capsule pulls all the dials and controls onto the steering wheel to focus the experience, avoiding clutter in traditional cars.

3D Printed Lamps Bring Customisable Design
LIGHTING DESIGN
Credit Ohhio
3D printing is well known now, but it is still difficult to create final products using the most accessible machines and materials. Ohhio is leveraging 3D printing fused deposition modeling layer by layer process to its advantage with its customisable lamp shades. The lines create a diffusion for the light enhancing the visual impact versus the print lines normally detracting from the overall finish of a product. The addition of customisable lamp components has created a fun and engaging process to select alternative colours to make your own lamp.

Rotating Bar Bluetooth Speaker Creating Dynamic Sound
PRODUCT CONCEPT
Credit Semin Park
I like covering conceptual projects as they often explore and create discourse beyond a new product function or feature. This bluetooth project explored how we can increase aural engagement and experience. This interactive bar enables users to play with the direction of sound being emitted from the speakers, creating possibility for multiple points of sounds. As well as the discourse created from this design it also effectively captures an aesthetic that would be at home with Bang Olufsen catalog.
