Sustainability- Australian Kerbside Waste Collection is Limited, RecycleSmart Steps in to Fill the Gaps
Credit Recycle Smart
In Australia both Government and councils are rushing to support and scale up the waste industry and its capability to handle the large volumes and types of waste. It’s wonderful to see a business stepping into the fold to provide a solution that diverts more waste from landfill whilst we await for critical infrastructure to be brought in. RecycleSmart provides simple and affordable service for hard to recycle items that often just get thrown in landfill such as soft plastics, e-waste, textiles, batteries and large items. There is a small cost however which is a barrier to some, although in comparison to a trip to the local tip its far more convenient and cheaper.

Product Design- 2024 design trends

The 2024 Product Design trends from Yanko Design are out! I’m a bit disappointed with the trends as Yanko Design has highlighted ‘human-oriented design’ that honestly is not a trend. Rather, since its inception in the 50’s by Stanford D-School but popularized by IDEO calling it ‘human centered design’ and is a core tenet for all designers. I promise there are some worthwhile trends in here but the other ‘trends’ to call out is inclusive design and sustainable design. It is imperative as designers you design with these as core tenets when creating new products, they are not trends or nice to haves. Now for some of the interesting trends to be aware of; biomimicry, personalisation, digital fabrication, minimalism is back, and importantly AI integration and its implications when integrating into product solutions.

Automotive- Yamaha Awarded Red Dot Design Award
Credit Yamaha
Yamaha has been recognised in the 2024 Red Dot Design Awards for its blend of futurism with unapologetic functionality, bucking the trend in motorcycles to ‘Tron’ it up and focus purely on modern minimal aesthetics whilst occluding mechanical elements. This is a refreshing take on the exposure of the thought and development that goes into motorbikes which are often thought of as ‘simple’ in comparison to their larger four wheeled cousins. Also if you haven’t seen my website I am a super fan of teal and aquamarine color palettes.

Sustainability- Unboxed Project Trials Reusable Fresh Produce Transportation Crates to Reduce Single Use Waste
Credit Planet Ark
A trial by Sustain and Sustainability Victoria is using 1000 reusable crates to transport fresh produce from farms and wholesalers to their destinations across Melbourne. This solution not only reduces the single use paper, cardboard and plastics but also reduces costs for stakeholders that need to frequently purchase packaging for their produce. As humans we like to move forward with Incredible developments but for once let’s reminisce to a simpler time and solution that worked for many centuries… Food crates to move our produce around.

Product Design- Innovative Neck Cooling Product Can Help in Hot Climates
Credit Torraslife
The Torraslife COOLiFY provides personal air conditioning. This personal comfort technology enables temperature regulation at the nape of the neck where blood temperature can be cooled before reaching the brain providing a whole body cooling effect (I remember doing this in 40 degree days with a frozen face washer). I find these products interesting as the application is wide, although the elephant in the room is climate change and the growing need for personal devices to navigate and live in our environments.
